Istanbul Music and Sema Group
Istanbul Music and Sema Group has been founded with permission by Faruk Hemdem Çelebi; a 22nd generation descendant of Mevlana. The group took the name of Istanbul Music and Sema Group in 1998.
The group aims to introduce Mevlâna, his tradition, Turkish Sufi music, whirling rituals and his words and share these with wider audience as well as to provide the continuation at the Mevlevi culture.
Performances feature Turkish Classical and Sufi music and the whirling ceremony in engaging performances that closely adhere to this historical tradition of 700 years.
The musicians and semazens who comprise the ensemble have combined these traditional forms of music and ceremony, have performed more than 150 concerts, not only in Turkey but in many other cities on four continents around the world.
Besides Sema/Whirling Ceremony, the musicians and soloists also present concerts from the rich repertoire of Classical and Mystical Turkish music with different sizes of groups.
Sema rituals evoke the call for “human love,” “brotherhood” and “tolerance” associated with the great mystic, Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi, who spoke to humanity over 700 years ago with the invitation “Come! Whoever you are, come! ”
It is an enchanting tradition and performance everyone should see at least once in a lifetime!
